(கடவேன், கடவாய் or கடவை etc.) def. v. added to the inf. of other verbs. It expresses 1. the duty (கடமை) of doing something as in செய்யக்கடவேன், I am bound to do so; 2. desire or the optative as செய்யக் கடவார், --கடவர், may he do so. Note: ஆக (ஆகவும்) may be added as in செய்யக்கடவாராக, may he do, செய்யக் கடவேனாக, I bind myself to do it.

[kṭvtu ] . A defective verb used in the optative form, expressing, 1st. The duty of doing a thing; 2d. Desire--as போகக்கடவாய், O! that thou wouldst go; 3d. Sometimes ஆக is affixed to it, and then it serves to denote the present, im perfect and future optative. செய்யக்கடவராக. May he do so.
