பூர்ணிமை தொடங்கி அமாவாசைவரை ஒவ்வொருபிடி அன்னங் குறைத்தும் அமாவாசை தொடங்கிப் பூர்ணிமைவரை ஒவ்வொருபிடி அதிகப்படுத்தியும் புசித்து அனுஷ்டிக்கும் பிராயச்சித்த விரதம். சாந்திராயண மதியந்தோறும் (திருவிளை.தலவி.9, 13) . Expiatory fast for one month commencing from the full moon, the food being diminished every day by one handful during the dark fortnight and increased in like manner during the bright fortnight ;
