These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speak ing concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being com prehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or con trariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3.
