, ''s.'' The five deities, or forms of deity performing operations for the benefit of souls. 1. பிரமா, creator, or evolver of the universe; 2. விட்டுணு, preserver, who furnishes each soul with its allotted portion of jois, and sor rows, as the results of former actions; 3. உருத்திரன், destroyer, reducing souls and worlds to their primitive elements; 4. மகேசுரன், obscurer, darkening the understanding, that the soul may act, and work off its accumulation of moral evil, so as to become ripe for salvation; 5. சதாசிவன், enlightener of illuminator, who imparts divine grace, and prepares the soul for emancipation, and union with the deity.
