Pep"per*idge, n. Etym: [Cf. NL. berberis, E. barberry.] (Bot.) Defn: A North American tree (Nyssa multiflora) with very tough wood, handsome oval polished leaves, and very acid berries, -- the sour gum, or common tupelo. See Tupelo.
