octant
n. அரைக்கால் வில்வரை, வட்டச் சுற்றுவரையின் எட்டிலொரு கூறான வில்வரை, அரைக்கால் வட்டக்கூறு, இரண்டு ஆரங்களுக்கிடைப்பட்ட வட்டப்பரப்பின் எட்டிலொரு கூறு, அரைக்கால் வாளகம், முத்தசை செங்குறுக்கீட்டால் ஏற்படும் இடவௌதயின் எண்கூறுகளில் ஒன்று. வானியலிலும் கடற்செலவிலும் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் எண்ம வட்டமானி, (வான்) கோள் நெறி வட்டத்தின் 45 பாகைக் கூறு, (வான்) மதி நெறிவட்டத்தில் 45 பாகைக் கோணத்திலுள்ள குறிப்பிடம்.
Oc"tant, n. Etym: [L. octans, -antis. fr. octo eight. See Octave.] 1. (Geom.) Defn: The eighth part of a circle; an arc of 45 degrees. 2. (Astron. & Astrol.) Defn: The position or aspect of a heavenly body, as the moon or a planet, when half way between conjunction, or opposition, and quadrature, or distant from another body 45 degrees. 3. An instrument for measuring angles (generally called a quadrant), having an arc which measures up to 9Oº, but being itself the eighth part of a circle. Cf. Sextant. 4. (Math. & Crystallog.) Defn: One of the eight parts into which a space is divided by three coördinate planes.
