Ni"trite, n. Etym: [Cf. F. nitrite. See Niter.] (Chem.) Defn: A salt of nitrous acid. Amyl nitrite, a yellow oily volatile liquid, used in medicine as a depressant and a vaso-dilator. Its inhalation produces an instantaneous flushing of the face.
