E*læ"is, n. Etym: [NL., fr. Gr. (Bot.) Defn: A genus of palms. Note: Elæis Guineensis, the African oil palm, is a tree twenty or thirty feet high, with immense pinnate leaves and large masses of fruit. The berries are rather larger than olives, and when boiled in water yield the orange-red palm oil.
