An"cho*ret, An"cho*rite, n. Etym: [F. anachorète, L. anachoreta, fr. Gr. ha to leave. Cf. Anchor a hermit.] Defn: One who renounces the world and secludes himself, usually for religious reasons; a hermit; a recluse.
